Logan Johnson is a trial lawyer whose practice focuses on business litigation. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants in complex commercial cases of all types. He has defeated claims exceeding $1 billion on behalf of defendants and collected tens of millions of dollars on behalf of plaintiffs. Johnson's trial practice has taken him to the courthouse often; he has tried 20 cases to jury verdict in state and federal court on behalf of his clients and has handled numerous arbitrations before private arbitration panels. Johnson has tried cases for clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies to individuals. During one four-month stretch, Johnson obtained three jury verdicts in excess of $1 million. He has handled cases in Washington State, the District of Columbia, Alabama, Mississippi, New Mexico, Delaware, the U.S Virgin Islands, Florida, and throughout Texas. He has arbitrated cases before the American Arbitration Association, FINRA, and the International Court of Dispute Resolution (ICDR). Johnson also has an active pro bono practice, having represented asylum seekers who were the subject of persecution, prisoners in need of legal aid, and charitable organizations. Since 2005, Texas Monthly magazine has recognized Johnson as a "rising star" in the area of business litigation. Johnson practices out of the Firm's Houston and Seattle offices.

Johnson has represented clients in a wide range of commercial cases, including contract disputes, business divorces, intellectual property disputes, insurance coverage and bad faith, and cases involving allegations of securities fraud and shareholder oppression. Johnson also handles litigation related to serious personal injury and professional malpractice. He spends a significant amount of his time representing clients in the construction, healthcare and energy industries - industries in which he has extensive subject-matter expertise. He is a member of the American Bar Association's Business Litigation Committee, Healthcare Litigation Committee, and Construction Litigation Committee.

Johnson graduated from Dartmouth College, cum laude, in 1994, where he was member of the men's varsity heavyweight crew. In 1999, he received his law degree from the University of Virginia, where he was an editor of the Virginia Journal of Social Policy & the Law. Upon receiving his law degree, Johnson worked for the international law firm of Vinson & Elkins, until he founded Schiffer Odom Hicks & Johnson in 2008. Johnson and his wife Kristin have two sons, Wilson and Davis.

Commercial and Business Litigation

  • Represented Fortune 50 company in ERISA class action alleging wrongful cut-backs to employee discounts that allegedly constitute defined benefit pension plans.
  • Tried $10 million bad-faith insurance case in federal court on behalf of national pharmacy chain; client reached a favorable settlement during trial.
  • Obtained $1.4 million verdict after a two-week jury trial in professional negligence case resulting from a failed real estate transaction. Claims related to title company's failure to fulfill its duties relating to closing the subject transaction.
  • Obtained $1.25 million verdict after one-week jury trial in breach of oral partnership case. Retained two weeks prior to trial.
  • Represented Australian energy company in $100 million breach-of-contract/ fraudulent-inducement case that related to the attempted purchase of oil and gas assets located in Indonesia; obtained dismissal of all claims.
  • Obtained dismissal with prejudice of $23 million dollar lawsuit against publicly-traded insurance company; case involved claims of tortious interference with contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and civil conspiracy.
  • Represented publicly-traded recreational vehicle manufacturer in class action; obtained reversal of certification of class of consumers alleging breach of warranty claims against client.
  • Represented publicly-traded financial services firm in a multi-million dollar broker-dealer case that involved allegations of "churning" investment products; case was pending in South Texas and was favorably settled for our client.
  • Represented national law firm in professional malpractice case related to the alleged development of tax shelters.
  • Represented publicly-traded investment bank in $250 million professional-negligence case.
  • Represented publicly-traded financial institution in consumer class action
  • Successfully prosecuted million dollar breach-of-contract claim on behalf of publicly-traded utility company against local power provider
  • Successfully prosecuted breach-of-contract claim on behalf of publicly traded financial institution on claims related to the factoring of accounts receivable; case was favorably resolved with our client receiving a substantial payment
  • Obtained $600,000 verdict after one-week jury trial in business divorce case.

Securities Fraud/Shareholder Oppression

  • Represented high-net-worth individuals in various FINRA arbitrations. Cases involved allegations of broker malfeasance, including claims of fraud, professional negligence, and "churning."
  • Represented plaintiffs in multi-million dollar securities fraud action.
  • Represented individual in shareholder oppression suit that arose out of the sale of a closely-held corporation; obtained dismissal of all claims on behalf of our client.
  • Representing oil & gas company (minority shareholder) in the prosecution of shareholder oppression suit against majority shareholder.

Healthcare Litigation

  • Successfully prosecuted a multi-million dollar breach-of-contract claim before the American Arbitration Association on behalf of national managed care organization.
  • Successfully obtained summary judgment on all claims for regional medical provider in a fraud case arising out of proposed construction of a hospital.
  • Represented with other attorneys national hospital developer in $23 million arbitration arising out of alleged mismanagement of hospital; case involved claims of breach of contract, fraud, and negligent misrepresentation and was successfully settled with our client receiving a multi-million dollar payment.
  • Represented with other attorneys national hospital developer in dispute with its former partner who opened a competing surgery center; case was successfully settled prior to trial.
  • Counsel for two national developers of physician-owned hospitals in numerous cases.

Construction Litigation

  • Represented major government contractor in breach-of-contract action related to civil construction project in Iraq; obtained with other attorneys dismissal of case on jurisdictional grounds; our client subsequently reached a favorable settlement.
  • Represented international, publicly-owned engineering, procurement, and construction company in contract dispute with subcontractor relating to the installation of fiber-optic cable in central business district of major U.S. city.
  • Part of team that represented international, publicly-owned engineering, procurement, and construction company in $10.5 million contract dispute.
  • Represented national hotel chain in multi-million dollar breach-of-warranty case regarding exterior-wall products.
  • Regional Counsel for national plumbing contractor, handling a variety of construction disputes

Other Matters

  • Part of team that represented a privately-held pharmaceutical company in multiple Texas cases involving a time-released opioid analgesic alleged to cause substance dependency.
  • Part of team that represented international and domestic tire manufacturers in products liability litigation involving wrongful death and catastrophic personal injury claims.
